Ill. school bus driver recounts shooting
The Illinois Central School Bus driver is praised for keeping calm and keeping her passengers safe during last week’s incident, in which she says seven men surrounded the bus and were using it for cover. One student had disembarked the bus when the shooting started, and the driver ran out and retrieved her.
GARY, Ill. — A driver for Illinois Central School Bus Inc. kept calm and kept her passengers safe when gunfire erupted around her bus last week, The Post-Tribune reports.
One young girl had disembarked the bus when the shooting began. The driver ran out to get the student and brought her back on the bus. The driver told the newspaper that seven men surrounded the bus and were using it for cover.
According to The Post-Tribune, surveillance video from the bus shows men running outside near the bus and six shots can be heard fired in rapid succession. One man was shot in the side. As the shooters scattered and the man who was injured left the scene, the driver continually talked to the students and told them she was proud of them.
