ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A first-grader was struck and killed by a pickup truck Thursday in an attempt to cross the road near a bus stop, the Rocky Mount Telegram reports.

Officials said that Janell Simmons, 7, was waiting to be picked up for school with three siblings at a bus stop. Janell was on the opposite side of the street from her siblings for an unknown reason; as the pickup truck and a school bus (which reportedly was not the one picking up the girl and her siblings) were heading toward each other on the two-lane road, Janell attempted to re-cross the road and was struck by the truck.

The truck driver, Eddie Suggs, will not face any charges from the incident, North Carolina Highway Patrol authorities said.
