WORTH COUNTY, Iowa — A man who pled guilty to vehicular homicide by reckless driving in the death of a young girl boarding a school bus has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, RadioIowa reports.

Aaron Gunderson received his sentence Friday in Worth County District Court. A more serious charge of vehicular homicide while intoxicated was dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

Gunderson struck 7-year-old Kadyn Halverson while she was walking toward a school bus that had its lights flashing and stop sign extended. He fled the scene while Halverson was dying of her injuries.

The man claims he didn't see the red lights. RIGHT!!! He was DUI? Why isn't he getting some time for that? Plea agreement? I'd call that a slap on the wrist. I can't understand the thinking of the lawyers. I know they are trying to save money from a trial but really? A child died, a family is devastated and he gets only 15 years with 10 1/2 he has to serve and gets out for good behavior? The family has lost their child FOREVER, how is this justice?

Fifteen years is not nearly long enough!! I have red light runners pass me on a daily basis. One of these days it will be too late! At least the police im my district stake out the hot spots and actually nab many offenders ~ it just happened this morning.
