Step cover targets slips on bus stairs
The product from Safeguard Technology wraps over the leading edge of steps for anti-slip protection. Officials say it is “easily installed on all bus applications and will last for years before needing replacement.”

A step cover from Safeguard Technology Inc. can be used on school bus stairs to help prevent slips and falls by students and drivers.
The product wraps over the leading edge of steps for anti-slip protection. Its surface incorporates fused alumina, a tough mineral aggregate that is characterized by hard, sharp peaks.
According to company officials, the fused alumina on the step cover contributes to a high coefficient of friction (which they say is nearly double ADA and OSHA guidelines) and creates high impact resistance for long-term service life.
The Puget Sound Workers’ Compensation Trust has partnered with Safeguard Technology to address driver slip-and-fall issues in the state of Washington. Steve Lyons, loss control consultant for the trust, recently discovered the Safeguard Technology step cover being used by a local school district.
“I discovered a product that is easily installed on all bus applications and will last for years before needing replacement,” Lyons said. “Installation of this product takes less time and is less costly than replacing anti-slip tape every six months.”
