PORTSMOUTH, Va. — On June 9, a 44-year-old Portsmouth Public Schools bus driver was assaulted by a student while the bus was stopped to allow passengers to exit in the afternoon.

According to the Portsmouth Police Department, a 14-year-old middle school student approached the driver while she was in the driver’s seat. The student made verbal comments to the driver and then struck her in the face and neck area with his fists.

The student was one of several who had been asked by the bus driver to sit in a seat while the bus was moving.

A friend transported the victim to a hospital, where she was treated for trauma to the face. She was later released and sent elsewhere for additional treatment.

School resource officers investigated the incident, and through juvenile domestic relations intake secured a petition for malicious wounding. On Tuesday, the student was taken into custody on a detention order. He was transported to the Tidewater Detention Center in Chesapeake.

The investigation is ongoing. Officials said the name of the student will not be released due to his age.
