VALPARAISO, Ind. — The first trial in the case of three students accused of terrorizing classmates on a school bus was set to begin this week.

The bus driver will be tried for felony neglect of a dependent, according to the Post-Tribune, and faces up to three years in prison if found guilty.

The three former Portage High School students allegedly tormented fellow passengers from August 2008 to March 2009. They are scheduled to go on trial early next year for charges ranging from sexual battery to strangulation and intimidation.

The driver's attorney points to the school's lack of support for all bus drivers, as administrators allegedly knew of trouble with the students from the year before but did not inform the driver.

I am wondering why the bus driver is being tried on a "felony charge?" Am I missing something? The school didn't share with him that the 3 kids were troublemakers. Shouldn't the school administrators be at fault in not removing the bully kids from the bus at the beginning of the school year? If the kids were bullying the other children, could they not have been bullying the driver also? Could the driver have been too scared to say anything? It sounds to me like the driver is being used as a scapegoat.

You have got to be kidding me.30 yrs on a bus I have come to realise all the people who tell us what to do and how to do it have never driven a bus. There should be a policy that all the people making decision on salaries, benefits, discipline and bus routes should be made to drive all bus routes for a month.with only a map no monitor. I would be willing to bet we would have a raise and more input to our bus routes. I use to drive in Munster IN.Things are so different the kids are so different. Now we have to worry about guns, knives, drugs. I don't know the story of what happened but hope everything works out.
