BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — The Hernando County Board of County Commissioners has approved the installation of street lights at 12 school bus stops and 10- by 10-foot concrete standing pads at four locations in an effort to improve safety and visibility for students and motorists.
Local news outlets reported that the improvements were prompted by an incident in which a student was fatally hit by a truck while waiting at a bus stop in September.
The Department of Public Works has been working with school board staff to address safety concerns at various school bus stop locations throughout the county and make recommendations to the commission.
The improvements should be complete by mid-February, officials said.
