Two children were killed and five others seriously injured after a 33-car freight train rammed into a school bus at an unmarked crossing in Murray County, Ga., on Tuesday, March 28. The accident occurred at approximately 7 a.m. The bus, carrying seven children to an elementary school near Chatsworth, Ga., was rammed by a CSX freight train reportedly traveling 55 mph. The impact separated the chassis from the body, which was found nestled against a train car about 100 yards from the crossing. Some of the children were found lying in gravel adjacent to the tracks, while others were still inside the bus. The Associated Press quoted resident Joe Brown, who lives about 300 feet from the accident scene, as saying the crash sounded like "thunder or a bomb." The bus driver, a 34-year-old woman, was injured but was reported to be in stable condition. No one on the train was injured. According to CNN, there was a rail crossing sign but no flashing signals or crossbar to warn the driver of an oncoming train. The tracks are said to be located on extremely hilly and curvy terrain covered in pine trees. The National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a team to investigate the accident.
