Student fires BB gun at bus driver

Two elementary school students who were using the gun on the bus are suspended after one of them fires the gun at the driver. Neither the driver nor any of the students on board are harmed during the incident.

The driver maintains control of the bus and turns back to a high school to report the incident, but she acknowledges that she ignored stop signs in the return trip.

Sheriff's deputies and fire personnel respond to a report of buses on fire and find four school buses aflame in the school's parking lot. Officials are considering the fire suspicious in nature but are not labeling it arson.

Last month, two men were killed in separate incidents wherein the vehicles they were driving struck the rear of stopped school buses. The Nebraska State Patrol issues a statement urging all drivers to “pay extra attention during those times when school buses are typically on the road.”

I recently heard the harrowing story of Jaycee Dugard’s life for nearly two decades after she was abducted from a school bus stop in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., in 1991 by convicted sex offender Phillip Garrido and held captive in the backyard of his home. This got me thinking about what school districts can do to maximize student safety at bus stops.

Former bus driver honored for preventing possible child abduction

Kandi Burnham is honored at Florida's annual Missing Children's Day for her actions. In December, Burnham became suspicious of a man who approached her bus pushing a wheelchair and asked for one of the students on board her bus. The man claimed to be the student's father, then her uncle. Burnham drove off and reported the incident.
Suicidal man sentenced for crashing into bus

Joseph Anthony Garcia pleads guilty to eight counts of assault with a deadly weapon and is sentenced to two years in prison on each count for ramming his car into a California school district's bus last year. Moments before the crash, Garcia failed in an apparent attempt to leap to his death by climbing a highway overpass.
Videos to instruct on school bus crisis response

The set of DVDs from Safe Havens International will cover such topics as why video tabletops and mental simulation exercises are effective at improving employees’ performance under life-and-death conditions. The organization has been using the scenarios in the videos for training purposes at school districts and to evaluate their level of preparedness. NHTSA launches traffic safety campaign for kids

It includes a public service announcement featuring characters from the show, a kid-focused safety pledge, and downloadable safety tips and activities on school buses, bikes and car seat use for parents and caregivers to use with children.
Hearing for bus drivers in fatal Mo. crash rescheduled

Katherine Shackelford and Kelly McEnnis-Mullenix were to be arraigned Wednesday on a misdemeanor charge of careless and imprudent driving for their part in a collision last year that killed two teens. The women's attorneys appear in court and reschedule the hearing for December.

Matt Collins observes the school bus drift through an intersection, and it appears as though no one is driving the vehicle. When he runs up to the bus and opens the door, he finds the driver slumped over without a pulse, so he puts on the bus’ parking brake and begins administering CPR on the driver.

IMMI has completed installation of its SafeGuard seating products on Waltham Public Schools' buses. A grassroots group educated the district’s school committee on benefits and expected costs of adding lap-shoulder belts to school buses, and more than 800 Waltham residents signed a petition requesting that the committee require the belts in its bus contracts.

Driver suspended for leaving student dangling from bus doors

The school bus driver reportedly stops in front of 5-year-old Alexis Luvell’s home and opens the doors to let her out, but drives off before ensuring that the girl has fully exited the bus. Her backpack is caught in the doors, and she is left hanging as the bus drives 41 feet down the road. The incident is under investigation.

Raccoon is chased off school bus, killed

A North Carolina driver takes a bus to a high school and realizes a raccoon is on board. A school resource officer chases the animal into a clearing, where it is shot and killed. The animal is being tested for rabies, and the bus is being kept at a shelter until a decision is made to put it back into service.
