Stop-arm safety campaign launched in Ariz.

Washington Elementary School District No. 6 Special Education Transportation Supervisor Antonio "Tony" Mlynek introduces "For Children's Sake, Stop for School Buses." The campaign includes television and print messages, and is the first PSA to address the topic in the state, according to Mlynek.
9-year-old throws asphalt at bus, chair at deputy

Amber Dawn Harris is charged with multiple felonies after she spits on school staff on board the bus, then exits the bus and throws pieces of broken asphalt at it. A deputy responds to the scene and follows Harris, who retrieves a metal chair from a yard and throws it, striking the deputy.
Camera system captures illegal bus passing incidents

The CrossingGuard School Bus Stop Arm Violation Enforcement System from American Traffic Solutions consists of high-resolution cameras mounted to the front and rear driver's side of a bus. When the school bus extends its stop arm, the system automatically detects if a vehicle passes the bus within the enforced zone. Officials say the CrossingGuard system does not require any action by the bus driver to activate it.
N.J. bill would mandate background checks for bus aides

Assemblywoman Connie Wagner is pushing legislation that would augment criminal background check requirements for school bus personnel to include all adults given responsibility for the safety of schoolchildren, which she said would close a loophole that left out bus aides. The measure also would enhance penalties against any employee found tampering with a school bus' onboard monitoring device.
NTSB study reports on curbside motorcoach safety

The six-month study was initiated following a March 12 bus accident that killed 15 people and injured 18 more. Among the findings are that curbside carriers with 10 or fewer buses and carriers who have been in business for 10 years or less have higher accident rates and higher roadside inspection violation rates.

Speed limiter allows for programming of 2 max speeds

InterMotive introduces a new two-speed road speed limiter to its Speed Sentinel product line that allows two different speeds to be programmed for a vehicle using one module. Both settings can be set between 7 mph and 80 mph in single mph increments.
Bus stop arm, flashing lights no longer required in city's school zones

The city of Wetaskiwin in Alberta changes its traffic bylaw so that bus drivers are no longer required to activate their bus' emergency flashing lights or extend the stop arm in a school bus zone located on or adjacent to school grounds within the city limits. Drivers are still required to use stop arms and lights in all other areas.

The MDZ (Minimize Danger Zone) Shield is a BASF polyurethane guard that acts as a safeguard in front of the rear dual wheels of a school bus. It is designed to deflect a child out of the path of the bus. The device has been installed on an Ohio school district’s buses for evaluation as part of a pilot program.

Signal-Safe, a wireless technology from Orion Innovations, is designed to discourage driver cell phone use (and resulting distraction) to protect passengers and prevent motor vehicle crashes. Signal-Safe utilizes a cell phone signal detection device to isolate the vehicle driver station. The device is integrated with the electrical function of the vehicle and is deployed when the ignition switch is in the "on" position and the vehicle is in motion.

Student fires BB gun at bus driver

Two elementary school students who were using the gun on the bus are suspended after one of them fires the gun at the driver. Neither the driver nor any of the students on board are harmed during the incident.
School bus crashes drop 10% in Calif.

Even with increases in the state’s number of school buses and miles traveled, collisions fell from 2,091 to 1,878 in fiscal year 2009-10. Five of the crashes resulted in fatalities, but none was a student bus passenger.
Student, bus driver cited for endangerment

A 15-year-old girl on a Tennessee school bus allegedly stands up and grabs the steering wheel from the driver, who students claimed was missing stops. The driver maintains control of the bus and turns back to a high school to report the incident, but she acknowledges that she ignored stop signs in the return trip.

Sheriff's deputies and fire personnel respond to a report of buses on fire and find four school buses aflame in the school's parking lot. Officials are considering the fire suspicious in nature but are not labeling it arson.
