Man tries to drive off in loaded school bus

Police in Palestine, Texas, say the 30-year-old man may have been involved in an altercation before he boarded a school bus and attempted to drive away. After struggling with the man, the bus driver and two bystanders were able to pull him from the bus and hold him on the ground until police arrived.

Jontae Dellano is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and his stepfather, Jamal Shields, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and contributing to the delinquency of a child for the pre-planned assault against Raheem Davis. Police say Shields drove Dellano to the bus stop and watched as he attacked Davis with a sock filled with padlocks on Dec. 13.

In last Friday’s accident in Englishtown, N.J., the truck apparently loses control and strikes an SUV before rolling over and landing on the small bus. The local fire company reports that there are no injuries.

In Monday’s incident in Florida, a 9 millimeter bullet is found on a bus, and a student comes forward and says it had fallen out of his pocket on the bus.

Louisiana State Police say it is suspected that a medical condition is the primary cause of the crash, in which the driver loses control of the bus and strikes several trees and a fence before traveling down an embankment. The driver "was not wearing her seat belt and was pronounced dead," police say.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.) Schools police say the women will be charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct for two separate incidents last week. In the first incident, a woman approaches a student on the bus with a baseball bat, and in the second incident, another woman allegedly starts cursing and screaming at the driver when she’s told to get off the bus.

Natasha Latrice Freeman boarded the bus in April and repeatedly struck her 11-year-old cousin and pulled the girl’s hair after a disagreement arose between the girl and Freeman’s son, according to the prosecutor in the case. She must wear for a week a sign that says, “I made a fool out of myself on a Bibb County Public Schools bus,” help wash a bus, serve five years on probation and pay $500 in attorney fees.

The total of nine school bus loading/unloading fatalities in the 2010-11 school year was an increase of one from the previous year, according to the Kansas State Department of Education's forthcoming national report. Another noteworthy finding of the 2011-12 report is that all of the children killed were at least 10 years old.
