LINCOLN, Neb. — Legislation that would have required seat belts on school buses has been “indefinitely postponed.”

The bill was introduced in January by Sen. John Harms. According to the Associated Press, Harms pulled the bill amid opposition from senators and school administrators, but he may reintroduce it next year.

A few weeks before the bill was derailed, lawmakers gave it first-round approval with a 33-4 vote.

The seat belt requirement would have applied to new school buses beginning in 2010. Lap belts, shoulder belts or a combination of belts would have been allowed.
