School bus sales in 2013 increased for the second year in a row, SBF research has found.

In the 2013 sales year (Nov. 1, 2012, to Oct. 31, 2013), there was a total of 36,073 school buses sold in the U.S. and Canada.

The 2013 total was 12.6% higher than that of 2012, in which 32,034 school buses were sold.

The 2012 total was an increase of 10.2% compared to 2011, which ended a five-year decline in school bus sales.

Breaking down the 2013 sales by school bus type, there were:

• 6,791 Type A/B units sold
• 25,218 Type C units sold
• 4,064 Type D units sold

SBF’s full school bus sales report will appear in the forthcoming 2014 Fact Book.

While this is very good news for the manufacturers it still is far beyond what the number should be to have a reasonable life expectancy for the equipment. On a 12 year life we would need to see 42-45,000 units a year to eventually bring down the aged fleet most school districts have allowed to happen some say due to budget cuts. There are ways to improve your fleet age and at STA we have some very innovated ways and working with districts to do just that. Partner together. Today's busesa re safer, stronger, have better technology and lower operating costs. States like SC and others are missing out on the chance to make a significant dent in their aged fleets by continuing to operate in the same old fashion way.
