CARTHAGE, Texas — Students who live in rural areas and are attending summer school at the school district here will have to find their own way to class, the News Journal reports.
Carthage Independent School District Superintendent Glen Hambrick told the news outlet that the district does not have the funding to pay for rural school bus transportation for summer school.
Two buses are provided to transport students who live within the city limits to summer school. Some summer school students are required to pay $50, $75 or $100 depending on whether they receive free, reduced or regular priced lunch, but that doesn’t include the price of transportation. Hambrick said it would cost the district $80,000 to send buses on all 34 regular routes during the summer to pick up all of the students.
