JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — For the second time this year, local school districts will receive money from the state to cover transportation costs.
Last month, Gov. Jay Nixon released $7.5 million for the state’s 522 districts, as SBFreported.
This time, the governor is releasing $10 million. A 6.3-percent growth in state revenue due to strong growth in corporate and individual income taxes, as well as a slight uptick in sales tax collections prompted the governor to release the additional funding for school bus transportation, according to a story on Missourinet.com.
“Since we’re a little bit ahead, the first place that the governor wanted to provide more money was to schools, and so he’s providing this additional $10 million because of that slightly better than anticipated news,” State Budget Director Linda Luebbering told the news source.
She added that it’s too early to tell whether any or all of the $52.5 million in school transportation money still being withheld will eventually be released.
