HILO, Hawaii — Gubernatorial candidate Neil Abercrombie toured the Big Island of Hawaii in a school bus during June to promote his campaign and visit residents in rural communities, who he might not otherwise have the chance to meet during his campaign.

Abercrombie's listening tour, which took place from June 24 to 27, began in Hilo, where he met with local business owners, had lunch in the high school cafeteria and visited community centers.

During the tour, Abercrombie also met residents working to promote education, agriculture and the arts in the state. Spokesperson Laurie Au said he chose to travel in a school bus due to his interest in the promotion of education as a priority.

Campaign supporters and friends joined Abercrombie on the school bus.

"I have already visited with many residents all over the Hawaii County — from Hawi to Miloloi'i — and I am eager to personally meet and talk with more residents, with our seniors, teachers, farmers, hotel workers and small business operators from Waimea to Ka'u," Abercrombie said. "I want to learn firsthand about their views, concerns and priorities."
