GARLAND, Texas — The Garland Independent School District (ISD) has begun playing educational videos on one of its school buses to improve student behavior during the ride.
As The Dallas Morning News reports, a 26-inch flat screen TV at the front of the bus plays videos supplied by the Discovery network, History Channel and other educational programming suppliers. Brief safety messages air between videos.
Installation costs $1,500 per bus, but Garland ISD's bus was equipped for free as a pilot. The bus was on display at the Texas Association for Pupil Transportation's conference last weekend.
Having only installed the system during the very end of the school year, the district has not been able to determine whether the videos cut down on student behavior problems, and is not committed to equipping the rest of its buses with video systems.
