COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohioans are reminded to show their support for school bus drivers during School Bus Driver Appreciation Day on May 5.

The Ohio Legislature designated the first Monday in May as School Bus Driver Appreciation Day to “increase public recognition of the important function that school bus drivers serve in safely transporting children to and from school.”

“Safely transporting students to and from school is vital to education,” said Susan Tave Zelman, superintendent of public instruction. “The professionalism of Ohio’s 20,000 school bus drivers is why the school bus remains — by far — the safest way for all students to get to school.”

In related news, state bus drivers will have an opportunity to showcase their knowledge and skills during the Ohio School Bus Driver Safety Roadeo on May 17. The 54 drivers scheduled to participate will be the top competitors from nine regional roadeos held on May 3.

The grand champion from the state roadeo will become eligible to participate in the School Bus Driver International Safety Competition in Calgary, Alberta, in June.
