Chick-fil-A and Stockpilingmoms.com partner to host the event, in which two school buses will collect donations for Boone County Schools and Kenton County Schools. The bus that collects the most donations will receive an additional $500 for its district.

The superintendent of Keller (Texas) Independent School District says that the system “will operate in much the same way as a city bus pass.” Families can use an online portal to pay either monthly or by the semester for a pass, which will come in the form of a student ID card with embedded RFID tags.

District to save $200K with fewer elementary bus stops

Officials at Gaston County Schools in North Carolina say that with statewide budget cuts, the district can no longer afford to have school buses stop at every household, but under the new route plan, no elementary student will be required to walk farther than one-fifth or two-tenths of a mile to a bus stop. The changes will also reduce bus trip time by 15 percent and reduce the need to idle buses.

School board votes to restore bus service for N.J. district

The district’s budget called for the elimination of “courtesy” busing for public school students in grades 1 through 4, and the district was also planning to consolidate private bus routes. Concerns about student safety prompted the school board to restore the service. All routes will be financed using money budgeted for a charter school, which will not open in the fall as planned.
Music festival to raise money for transportation program

The WoodsRock III Musical Festival is an annual event that started in 2009 to support bus service for a North Carolina charter school. The festival, which will be held later this month, is a community-wide effort — the participants who plan and work at the festival are volunteers, including the bands that perform.
Neb. district cuts 30 bus stops to boost efficiency

Aurora Public Schools reduces the number of its bus stops from 100 to 70 to make routes more efficient and to help reduce fuel costs. The school board also considers charging a flat rate per child and issuing identification cards.
Ky. district officials have educational bus ride

The bus takes administrators from Clark County Public Schools through the area that the district serves to 12 schools. The district’s superintendent says the purpose was to help staff members who do not live in the county to see the neighborhoods that the students live in and to give them an idea of what students experience as they ride to and from school.
S.D. bus driver honored for service to students

The South Dakota School Transportation Association names Theresa Mellen of Douglas School District its 2011 School Bus Driver of the Year. Mellen conducts bus safety classes and assists with first aid training. She also serves her community as a certified EMT and a foster parent.

Ill. district to cut costs with new bus pickup sites

Under the system, high school students will be asked to walk to their nearest elementary or middle school. If the nearest school is more than 1.5 miles away or if the route is hazardous, a neighborhood stop will be established.
Fla. counties to use online training for school bus drivers

School Training Solutions, which offers training to meet state-mandated in-service instruction requirements for bus drivers, is partnering with four counties in Florida. Statewide budget cuts caused the counties to look for a more economical solution for driver training, according to the company.

Edwardsville School District 7 and Madison County Transit in Illinois are providing students with alternatives for transportation to school: SchoolPool, which helps parents and high school students meet people and develop carpools, and the Walking School Bus, in which groups of adults supervise students walking to school.
Hawaii increases school bus fees to offset budget cuts

The state Board of Education votes unanimously to increase the bus fare for public school students from 50 cents to $1.25 for a one-way ride. The increase is needed to make up for a $9.6 million legislative cut in funding for student transportation.

The surcharge of $1,400 will take effect on new orders placed after Aug. 4, 2011. Officials for the school bus manufacturer say that while the company has been able to offset a substantial portion of global commodity price increases, with the magnitude of the increases the surcharge has become necessary.
