LaHood to step down as transportation secretary

Ray LaHood announces on Tuesday to the employees of the U.S. Department of Transportation that he will not serve a second term, but he says he will stay on until his successor is confirmed. LaHood showed support for the pupil transportation industry during his term, calling for funding of a program to promote the benefits of yellow buses, attending industry events and taking on such issues as distracted driving.

Over the holidays, transportation and staff district-wide at Denver Public Schools donated clothes to benefit the nonprofit organization Denver Children’s Advocacy Center. Officials say the busload of items was delivered on Jan. 23, and the clothing will help more than 100 children.

The company's three new educational courses teach children how to be safe in and around their school buses. They are age-specific for three groups: pre-K to grade 2, grades 3 to 5, and grades 6 and above.
S.D. district to pilot fee-based busing

At least five fee-based bus routes will be run throughout Sioux Falls School District next year for specialized elementary and middle school students. Fees will range from $50 to $150 per semester, based on families' lunch payment qualifications.

Two months after becoming president of NAPT, Alex Robinson began running the largest school district transportation department in the nation in December 2011. Since then, her staff at the NYC Office of Pupil Transportation has undergone more than 40 hours of training, and NAPT has grown its connections to relevant organizations around the globe.

The sales and support facility in Garden City Park, N.Y., is slated to open in the coming weeks, according to company officials, and it will serve Trans Tech Bus customers in the New York City area who are in need of bus service, warranty work and parts.
Rosco event recorder to feature optional third camera

The company’s Dual-Vision XC Continuous Automotive Event Recorder will be available with the third camera starting April 1. Officials say that with it, the Dual-Vision XC can capture passengers deep into the vehicle compartment or record reverse backup and other operations.

N.J. district to put ads on school buses

Medford Township Public Schools will reportedly become the first school system in the state to begin school bus advertising, which the district’s superintendent says is an “effective means of generating vital capital and an exciting community awareness platform for corporate sponsors.” A local grocery store chain will advertise on the operation’s 52 buses.

NYC mayor: School bus strike would jeopardize student safety

With the city's biggest school bus driver union set to go on strike Wednesday, education officials put backup measures in place, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg sharply criticizes the union's plan. The strike, he says, "would necessarily jeopardize the education and safety of the more than 150,000 students who take school buses every single day."
Batteries stolen from 16 buses at Fla. district terminal

Drivers arrive at work on Monday and discover that the batteries have been stolen. The Broward Sheriff’s Office says that the thief or thieves probably wanted to sell the batteries for scrap, so investigators check scrap yards in the area.
