Alabama students honored for actions during bus hijacking

Dr. Thomas Bice, Alabama’s superintendent of schools, presents proclamations to each of the students who were on their school bus when it was hijacked by gunman Jimmy Lee Dykes, who allegedly shot driver Charles Poland and then abducted one student. Bice says the students displayed safety skills that Poland taught them, and he recounts how the students loved Poland.

Trans Tech Bus National Sales Manager Brian Barrington says these dealers provide “excellent customer service before, during and after the sale.”
Pupil transporter, alt-fuel advocate Mike McClung passes

McClung, who served in the transportation department at Northside Independent School District in San Antonio from 1977 to 2000, passed away on March 9 at the age of 65. McClung was a longtime supporter of using alternative fuels to power school buses, and he was instrumental in converting the district’s fleet from diesel to propane.
Blue Bird honors 26 dealers for excellence

The school bus manufacturer names Western Bus Sales of Oregon and the river counties of lower Washington as its 2012 Dealer of the Year, and the company also receives the Propane MVP Award. Blue Bird recognizes other dealerships with regional, “propane rookies” and service awards.

New state director named in Kansas

Keith Dreiling, a former lieutenant with the Kansas Highway Patrol, joins the Kansas State Department of Education as state director for pupil transportation. He replaces industry veteran Larry Bluthardt, who retired last year.

Troy Clarke, currently Navistar's president and chief operating officer, will become president and CEO and will join the company's board in April. Lewis Campbell, who has served as executive chairman and interim CEO since August 2012, will step down from those positions and from the board.

Charges dropped for boy who brought fake gun on bus

The 10-year-old flashed an orange-tipped replica gun to another student on the school bus, and he was arrested the next day after another bus passenger reported him. Three weeks after the incident, prosecutors say they “did not feel it was appropriate or productive to proceed with criminal prosecution.”
First Blue Bird redesigned All Americans delivered in Georgia

Ten of the manufacturer's 2014 All American buses are delivered on Wednesday to the state’s Department of Corrections, where officials say they will be placed into service immediately, replacing buses in the existing fleet that have each accumulated over 300,000 miles. The buses can seat 50 passengers, and they feature pass-through luggage compartments and interior storage bins.

At a celebration held at Transportation South, Harry Leach of Trussville City Schools is named Alabama's Love the Bus driver of the year. A moment of silence is observed for Charles Poland, the driver who was fatally shot while protecting his passengers in Midland City.

The event stems from the partnership between the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai and the National Association for Pupil Transportation in the U.S. The Dubai school transportation conference, to be held April 21 to 23, will feature workshops on pertinent topics — including safety, regulations and student management — and will include a trade show.

Perhaps most notable among those connections was in Dubai, whose Roads and Transport Authority tapped the expertise of our National Association for Pupil Transportation to promote school bus safety in the Emirate and beyond.

The school bus manufacturer is once again recognizing bus drivers and the job that they do by asking students to nominate their drivers for the Children’s Choice School Bus Driver of the Year contest. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to submit essays of at least 90 words describing what makes their driver special.
