Fla. district preps busing changes for GOP convention

Road closures and increased traffic will be among the challenges for Hillsborough County Public Schools’ transportation department as the Republican National Convention comes to Tampa in late August. Alternate busing plans will go into effect before the convention so staff and students can get used to the different routes.

Officials from the American Association of School Administrators say sequestration represents budgetary cuts that will impact almost every federal program in January 2013, including cuts to education. Survey results in the report indicate that the cuts will translate to reductions in and eliminations of personnel, curriculum, facilities and operations.

District to put high schoolers on transit buses

Broward County Public Schools in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., reportedly plans to test a pilot program this fall in which these students would ride transit buses to school instead of yellow buses. The district would pay the county for the service, which is expected to save in transportation costs.
Over 100 school bus routes to be cut in Hawaii

As part of efforts to tackle a transportation budget shortfall of $17 million, the Hawaii Department of Education identifies 103 school bus routes to be eliminated. The move affects nearly 2,400 students.

Jeremy North and William Ellegood, University of Missouri–St. Louis doctoral candidates, win the graduate school research fair with their project "Applying Business Logistic Optimization Modeling to School Bus Routing." Their algorithm aims to minimize the distance traveled and the number of buses required for transporting students.

Denver Public Schools' Success Express gives students in two northeast communities access to greater school options and opportunities via yellow bus service. The transportation department earns a Gold Peak Award from the Colorado American Marketing Association for the launch of the shuttle system.
District: 4 to be disciplined in bus monitor bullying

The Greece (N.Y.) Central School District identifies four middle school students as participants in the incident, in which school bus monitor Karen Klein was profanely taunted. The students will receive "disciplinary action to the fullest extent appropriate," officials say.

NYAPT addresses bus monitor bullying incident

Last week, video of monitor Karen Klein being verbally abused by students on the bus went viral. The New York Association for Pupil Transportation says that the students’ behavior toward Klein was offensive and pledges to work with state and local officials to enhance training to help bus drivers and monitors respond to such situations.

District launches new bus evacuation training effort

The transportation staff at Maine School Administrative District #37 in Harrington incorporates side window emergency exit evacuation into its training following an accident wherein the rear exit of a bus became unusable. Director of Transportation Dawn Coffin tells SBF that the bus drivers learned safe techniques for this type of evacuation, and the district hopes to begin the training with students in the upcoming school year.

David Ruback, president of REI, passes away

Ruback lost his battle with pancreatic cancer last month at the age of 56. Company officials say Ruback, who joined the company in 1987 and was promoted to president in 1998, was instrumental in REI’s growth and commitment to service.

Prison officials say that Richard Schoenfeld, who was among the three convicted in the infamous 1976 school bus kidnapping in California, will get out on parole this month.
