Cuts proposed to Connecticut school transportation funding

The budget approved by the state Senate's appropriations committee would eliminate funding for public and non-public school transportation by some $28 million per year. A coalition of education, municipal and legislative officials calls for the restoration of funding.

Texas district’s transportation services honored for sustainability

The Houston Independent School District wins the National Association of Fleet Administrators Excellence in Public Fleet Sustainability award for 2013. The district is recognized for its use of alternative fuels and partnership with the University of Houston to test a school bus filter that will convert smog-producing pollutants emitted from engines into water and nitrogen gas.
Navistar sells RV business to Allied Specialty Vehicles

Allied Specialty Vehicles, which is the parent company of Collins Bus Corp., acquires Monaco and other brands from Navistar's recreational vehicle business. Navistar officials call the sale "another important step" in the company's turnaround plan.

Todd Isaacs of District Solutions says that school bus advertising can help cash-strapped districts raise revenue, and he points to the ads' record on the road. The approximately $15,000 that one district has raised so far is being put toward transportation for homeless students to after-school programs.

Joyce Bernard applied for and accepted a position at Serena Community Unit District #2 in 1967, craving a job that allowed her to spend a lot of time with her children. Now in her 70s, she tells SBF that the thing she loves most about her job is the students she transports, and she has no immediate plans to retire.

The Explorer DX-HD records at 30 frames per second at 720x480 resolution on 12 channels with audio plus one high-definition channel at 1280x720 resolution. The DVR features dual streaming technology, and when used in combination with the company’s vMax Commander video management software, Seon’s automated Health-Check feature monitors DVR, camera and hard drive status.

Theatrical release for film on 2nd life of school bus

"La Camioneta" follows a decommissioned school bus from an auction in Pennsylvania to its new life in Guatemala, where it is repainted and repurposed to provide public transportation between the highlands and Guatemala City. The documentary will soon run at theaters in New York City, Los Angeles and San Diego.

Michigan pupil transporter saves couple from burning home

Richard Deering, transportation supervisor for Northport School District, was driving by the home when he noticed smoke, and he stopped to help the husband and wife. The husband had undergone knee replacement surgery, so Deering carried him to his truck, and he also tried to save the couple’s vehicle from the garage, where the fire had started.

Dubai school transport conference draws global crowd

About 17 nations are represented at Dubai’s first school transportation conference. Speakers and delegates make recommendations in such areas as school transportation safety and security, driver training and road layout around schools. NAPT President Alex Robinson tells SBF that being at the event had a feeling of “what it was probably like to be at an early Warrensburg conference.”

Larry Chin joins the company, which provides HD Plug & Play mobile video cameras, as president of product development. Chin has more than a decade of experience in the mobile video market, having previously worked for such companies as DDS Wireless International, Seon Design and Honeywell.
