For the first time in more than 15 years, Fairfax County (Va.) Public Schools had a single countywide meeting for all of its 1,600-plus drivers and attendants. Participants were shuttled to Fairfax High School from sites across the county using 60 school buses. The activities took place in the school auditorium, with overflow seating in the cafeteria, equipped with closed-circuit television. Transportation staff was treated to a buffet breakfast and was entertained and motivated by nationally known speaker Steve Gilliland from Performance Plus, who talked about personal attitudes about life and work. During his opening remarks, Division Superintendent Dan Domenech was presented with a driver’s jacket and hat sporting Transportation’s logo. The gift was in honor of his having participated in school bus driver training courses earlier in the year, in an effort to understand drivers’ responsibilities. In a portion of the program titled, “The Road Ahead,” the focus turned to issues of direct concern for drivers. Topics included assignment of new air-conditioned buses, inclusion initiatives and preparing for possible threats of terrorism. Drivers were instructed in preventive measures to take and procedures to follow when faced with the treat of a bomb, a gun or knife or a chemical or biological weapon. Donated door prizes, ranging from hats and balloons to printers and scanners, were presented to participants as an added thank-you.
