KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The long-running public television program MotorWeek recently turned its cameras on a green version of school bus yellow.
The show did a segment of its Clean Cities Success Stories on Kansas City Public Schools’ “sparkling” new fleet of 47 compressed natural gas (CNG) school buses.
The project was made possible by a stimulus grant from the Department of Energy through the Kansas City Regional Clean Cities Coalition.
The program also looks at the district’s CNG fueling equipment, which includes 35 time-fill dispensers with dual hoses.
Host John Davis notes that Kanas City Public Schools is the first district in the state to run CNG buses, and officials hope to serve as a model for others.
“That’s absolutely what we want to do — is be the forerunner of this and the example for other school districts and other children,” says George Taylor, the district’s director of transportation, during the program.
