First Student driver honored for customer service excellence

CINCINNATI — Cincinnati USA Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) recently recognized First Student driver Richard Fumi with its Pinnacle Award for Outstanding Service.

The award honors those on the hospitality frontline who go above and beyond the call of duty to provide excellent customer service.

“We are so proud that Richard was recognized for his outstanding service,” said Joe Eversole, First Student location manager. “His commitment is unparalleled, and this award is a testament to his hard work and dedication.”

Fumi joined the First Student team in 2007. In addition to transporting Cincinnati Public Schools students to and from school and extracurricular events, he also serves as a dispatcher.

During the summer of 2012, Fumi helped manage charter operations for the World Choir Games, which included making sure more than 50 buses for participants were on time and at the correct location during the two-week competition.

At the end of the event, First Student learned of a choir that arrived too late to compete in the official games. Fumi volunteered his time to drive members around Cincinnati so they could perform in area churches and community venues.  

Fumi received the award during the CVB’s annual meeting on March 6. He was one of three individuals recognized for their service achievements.

In other news, First Student, which provides transportation services for Park Hill School District in Kansas City, Mo., was recently named the 2013 Business of the Year by the Park Hill District Hall of Fame Committee.

The award recognizes First Student’s support of the community and district.

“The First Student team works hard to make sure that every one of the buses is safe and on time,” said Dr. Paul Kelly, assistant superintendent for business services. “The team has a long history of supporting our schools and a continued willingness to help wherever they can. We are pleased to present First Student with this year’s Park Hill Business of the Year Award.”

First Student operates 108 buses in the area, which are equipped with crossing arms, GPS, video cameras and Child Check-Mate child reminder systems. The company employs 220 drivers and staff and transports approximately 6,500 Park Hill students daily.

In addition to providing safe transportation services, officials said First Student supports the work of Park Hill’s Education Foundation.
