AURORA, Ontario — Stock Transportation employee Donna Graves was recently named 2011-12 School Bus Driver of the Year by the Nova Scotia Federation of Home and School Associations (NSFHSA).

Stock Transportation is the Canadian subsidiary of school bus contractor National Express Corp. Graves has driven for Stock for more than 12 years, transporting students for Shatford Memorial Elementary School in Hubbards, Nova Scotia.

Each year, the NSFHSA solicits nominations from home and school associations to recognize an outstanding bus driver for service and dedication to the safety of the children they transport. Graves was nominated for the award by Shatford Memorial Elementary School.

"I am honoured to nominate Donna Graves,” home and school Co-Chair Sandra Labor said. “Donna is a reliable and well-natured person. She is one of those bus drivers who has the combination of skills needed to make it a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, including parents. We all know that our children are safe and happy when Donna is in the driver's seat."

Ken Rutley, principal of Shatford Memorial, added that students feel safe with Graves, they listen to her and act respectfully toward her.

“She always takes the time to explain her safety concerns with the students,” Rutley noted. “She has shown that she is both creative and sincere when trying to help the students understand bus safety."

Moreover, Troy Phinney, general manager for Stock Transportation in Halifax, Nova Scotia, said that the company’s school bus drivers receive in-depth training that reflects the emphasis on safety as a primary value. “Donna is terrific at her job and in caring for the students,” he added.
