SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A driver for school bus contractor First Student is being praised for his actions to protect the students on his bus last week when it was caught in a shooting, The Post-Standard reports.

The driver was on his afternoon route last Tuesday when bullets began coming from a four-door car chasing a white minivan. Bullets hit some cars and at least one shot hit the bus, but no one was injured in the incident.

Sgt. Tom Connellan told the news source that the bus driver “did a fantastic job” — he instructed the kids to get down out of the line of fire, and he was able to get the bus out of the area. He then called dispatchers to notify police of the shooting before continuing on his route.
