Family sells bus company to Riteway

The Degnitz family, after 40 years in the business, sells Degnitz Bus Service to Riteway Bus Service Inc. Degnitz served the School District of Random Lake in Wisconsin, and officials say Degnitz's management and drivers will continue in their roles as part of the Riteway team.
First Student names location manager, wins new contract

Dave Chappell will oversee all transportation operations in Greensboro, N.C., including safety and maintenance for Guilford County Schools. In other news, the company will provide school transportation for the Nebraska panhandle under a four-year agreement with Gering and Scottsbluff Public Schools.
First Student to provide shuttle service to high schoolers

The school bus contractor will transport these students within Lorain (Ohio) City School District for the upcoming school year following the district’s decision to eliminate high school busing due to budget cuts. The cost for the service is $20 per student for the entire school year, and it is being provided free of charge to the district.

Betty Jeanne Trobec, owner of Trobec’s Bus Service Inc., receives the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Bruce Dischinger, an owner of Monarch Bus Service, receives the Jim DeVeau Award.

Drivers from around the nation participate in the 42nd Annual School Bus Driver International Safety Competition. Mark Koelbl of First Student in Alberta places first in the Conventional Bus category, Antonio Perez of San Dieguito Union High School District in California takes top honors in the Transit Bus category and Russell Altizer of Montgomery County Public Schools in Virginia wins first place in the Small Bus category.
N.Y. association names top technician

Matt Gould, a service manager and school bus technician for First Student, receives the 2012 Technician of the Year award from the Central New York Association for Pupil Transportation. Officials say the annual award recognizes a school transportation professional who works to ensure a safe and efficient school bus ride.
First Student wins 2 Mich. contracts

The contractor will serve Flint Community Schools in a three-year agreement, adding 45 new buses to the fleet, and Saginaw Public Schools under a five-year agreement, adding 20 new buses to the fleet. In other news, parent company FirstGroup America hosts a delegation from the Arab state Oman to discuss best practices, including road safety, management and hiring.
First Student purchases 86 Blue Bird propane buses

The contractor receives the buses this month, and they will be used by Portland (Ore.) Public Schools. Officials for Blue Bird and ROUSH CleanTech, which developed the fuel system for the buses, say that it is the largest single order to date for the Next Generation Propane-Powered Vision. In related news, John Roselli joins Blue Bird as director of alternative fuels.

Durham wins Wash., Ore. contracts

The contractor will serve Newport (Wash.) School District and St. Helens Public Schools in Portland under five-year agreements that will begin in July for the upcoming school year. Durham will operate 78 routes for Newport and 28 routes for St. Helens.
Durham awarded 3-year contract

Durham School Services will operate 97 home-to-school routes and 109 buses for Rochester (Mich.) Community Schools starting in July. The company reportedly plans to hire as many of the district's drivers, monitors, mechanics and staff as possible, and officials say the contract will save the district approximately $4.7 million over the three-year period.

The company travels more than 250,385 miles between preventable collisions in fiscal year 2011-12, and the chance for injury on or around a school bus is one in 7,690,000 million miles driven. This achievement is attributed to employee training and face-to-face safety conversations. In other news, the company is awarded a new five-year contract with Xenia (Ohio) Community Schools.
Stock Transportation driver honored for service excellence

Donna Graves is named the 2011-12 School Bus Driver of the Year by the Nova Scotia Federation of Home and School Associations. Graves, who has worked for Stock Transportation for more than 12 years, was nominated by Shatford Memorial Elementary School, where she transports students.
Durham School Services wins R.I., Minn. contracts

Under a three-year agreement with the Burrillville School Department in Harrisville, R.I., the company will operate 27 home-to-school routes and 34 buses beginning with the 2012-13 school year. Durham’s contract with Burnsville-Eagan-Savage Independent School District 191 in Burnsville, Minn., is reportedly the company’s first in the state, and it will operate 100 buses for the district.
STI subsidiary wins new contract

In addition to securing the contract, Student Transportation of America Inc. signs two non-material letters of intent to acquire two school transportation companies. Officials say the contract and acquisitions will add over 190 vehicles to the fleet and annualized revenues of over $9 million.

Ill. bill would set new rules for awarding bus contracts

The General Assembly passes House Bill 4029, which would require that school districts award school bus contracts by first considering the bidder most able to provide safety and comfort for students, and stability of service. Then price may be considered. The legislation now awaits approval or veto from Gov. Pat Quinn.
Birnie Bus adds over 200 units with new contract

The Rome, N.Y.-based company will start work on a new school transportation contract in Duval County, Fla., in August. The pact will increase Birnie's fleet by about 221 large buses.
