Federal Mogul has released a new Abex commercial vehicle drum brake block that officials said meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 121 reduced stopping distance (RSD) requirements.

FMVSS 121 has been amended to reduce the specified stopping distance to 250 feet — a 30% reduction — for new truck tractors built on or after Aug. 1, 2011.

The Abex RSD drum brake block includes three application-specific formulations engineered to enhance overall performance while meeting the new FMVSS requirement, including RN, a premium organic, 20,000-pound axle rating, copper-free formulation; RSM, a premium semi-metallic, 29,000-pound axle rating, for RSD and severe service applications; and RSC, a premium semi-metallic combo formulation, 23,000-pound axle rating.

All Abex brake blocks are engineered and manufactured to Federal Mogul’s stringent quality and performance standards and ensure superior modulus of elasticity and exceptional flexural strength for enhanced resistance to cracking, according to the company.
